What is a Bowling Handicap?

A bowling handicap is an equalizer used in leagues and tournaments to allow bowlers of diverse skill levels to compete on an even footing. Rather than awarding victory strictly to the bowler with the highest raw (scratch) score, handicap pins are added to lower-average bowlers' scores to balance their odds against high-average bowlers.

The Standard USBC Handicap Formula

The official formula used by the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) is:

Handicap = (Base Score - Bowler Average) × Percentage

For example, if your league uses a baseline of 220 at 90% and your current rolling average is 170:

  • Difference: 220 - 170 = 50 pins
  • Multiply by 90%: 50 × 0.90 = 45 pins
  • Your handicap is 45 pins per game (or 135 pins for a standard 3-game series).
